How do video compression standards affect the encoding process?

Posted by raymondbond007 on April 1, 2009

Explains, Katharina Geutebruck, managing director of Geutebruck GmbH  which manufactures and develops intelligent video security solutions.

Whenever a new video standard is introduced, a wave of uncertainty goes through the security community, and a few manufacturers see an easy marketing opportunity among disconcerted buyers.

So, if you are currently thinking: ”Should I be demanding H.264 or the latest standard?”, “It’s new, so is it better than previous ones?” or “Does that mean other digital video standards will soon be obsolete?”- then you should read on.

The first thing to recognize is that a standard does not define the specific process which is used to encode the data. This could be contrary to what you might expect. Just because the two systems use the same standard, it does not indicate that the video output result will be of equal quality or similar utility, in fact it may vary generally.

The encoding process is defined by the developer’s expertise rather than the video compression standard.

You can read more in depth about this covering topics like

  1. Video compression standard – a set of tools
  2. Differences between video compression standards
  3. Evaluating video standard selection process

Yu Kitamura of Sony Professional Solutions Europe explains the benefits of H.264 – the latest video compression technology.  Covering areas like Video compression standards - JPEG / M-JPEG / MPEG-4, Benefits of high-performance video compression technology and H.264 – coding standard of choice.

Last Update: 12/10 9:05 pm

WEST PALM BEACH, FL — A teen-aged boy, we’ll call him A.B., took the stand to testify against a former family friend.
The boy said when he was 12 his abuser forced him into oral sex in a number of locations.

“Anywhere in his truck, in my bedroom, in the living room where the tape was taken and also in his bedroom,” A.B. told the court.

In court today the state revealed how the defendant, William Romines, befrinded the family soon after the boy’s father had died. He showered A.B. with gifts and drove him to school. The mother became suspicious and installed a hidden camera.

“I never thought that I was going to discover something so ugly,” she testified.

The abuse was caught on tape. Today, that video was shown to the jury.

It’s not the only case where home cameras have caught questionable behavior or crimes.

Mike Haldas sells and installs surveillance systems through his company, CCTV Camera Pros. Some of them look like motion detectors.

“This little hole right here is actually a camera. It can capture a room up to about 15×15,” he said.

He said technology is helping parents keep an eye on the home while they’re away, and watch what’s going on over the internet.

“It’s much more affordable for people to do things like nanny cams where they can keep an eye on the home if they have a nanny or an elderly person being taken care of,” said Haldas.

He said home security cameras account for about 35% of his business.

As far as we know, today’s case against Romines is still ongoing.

Posted by raymondbond007 on October 15, 2008

Morley Independent councillors feels that the number cameras installed in the town are not enough to extend surveillance in areas including Corporation Street and Queensway although most of the Queen Street is covered by the surveillance system.

A report showed that most of the arrests had been made because of the CCTV camera footage but quiet a few suspects were often unable to be captured because of the limitations in reach by the 5 CCTV cameras in operation.
