CCTV Camera system on Yeadon High Street goes live

CCTV Camera system goes live on Yeadon High Street with 3 cameras monitoring 24 hrs a day.

As quoted by Coun Downes on www.wharfedaleobserver.co.uk
“Several years ago we conducted a law and order survey of Otley and Yeadon. It showed very clearly that over 90 per cent of the respondents were in favour of a CCTV system.”

“Armed with this support I visited the control centre in south Leeds to reassure myself how Leedswatch operates the scheme.

“I was very keen to ensure that Yeadon had CCTV Cameras to improve public safety as many people said they felt unsafe on the High Street, particularly at night.

“I supported the scheme knowing that the images are monitored live and are recorded for evidence. However this is done in a way which is very secure and confidential.

“It was then that I asked colleagues to consider funding it from the Area Committee’s revenue funding. Once that had been agreed there was no looking back.”

The three cameras are installed at the top of the High Street near the roundabout, secondly at the bend halfway down High Street, and the last one at the bottom of High Street to cover the Town Hall and Library.

The CCTV Cameras are linked via fibre optic cables to the Leedswatch system that are monitored at the police area control.

CCTV Camera to “hear” and capture

How about a CCTV Camera with “Ears”? British scientists are developing a technology that facilitates a CCTV camera to “hear” a crime happening and turn around to capture the event.

The researchers are working on software that can recognise sounds such as breaking glass, shouting or crowds gathering, and prompt a CCTV Camera to swing towards the noise in 300 milliseconds – the same time it would take a person to turn their head if they heard someone scream. The software may eventually be able to identify words that suggest a crime is being committed.
